    History of the Cartouche

Cartouche Originally, the Cartouche was worn only by the pharaohs or kings of Egypt and the Egyptian gods. A Cartouche is a rope-like, oval shaped line that is drawn around the king's throne and birth name. The oval in which the pharaoh’s first name was written was intended to protect him from evil spirits. The cartouche represents a rope folded and tied together at the end. The word cartouche came from the French word for cartridge because its shape reminded Napoleon's soldiers of their gun cartridges. The Ancient Egyptians did not use the word cartouche - their word for the enclosure was "shenu" which means "to encircle." The circle shape of the "shenu" reminded every one of the power the king's rule held over everything the sun encircled.
